What do I do? I was in a decent set/whatever it's called now with a girl last night, and a mutual friend walks up to us and starts pulling her away. Didn't know what to do...

That's a shitty move for a friend.

Give him a look. If that doesn't work, pull him aside and set him straight. If you have to wait until later, do it later, but let him know.

If that doesn't work, he's an asshole, so fuck that guy.

If they are a real friend, you should be able to just say "Listen man, I was trying to get with her and you cockblocked me, don't do it again, it's not cool" had to do this with a few mates over the years and they've always apologised/understood. If they carry on then that's the time to tell them they've taken it too far and that from now on you're gonna be fucking ruthless!
