I have heard the arguments for and against dating co-workers. That said, this girl who is a fellow tutor of mine at Sylvan ( not our primary job for either of us). We both tend to be introverts and not converse with each other much at work. But we have exchanged quite a few words on Facebook . As it would be inappropriate to ask her out with kids and coworkers around, should I do so over FB?

Idk about Facebook, try and get her number and ask.

But I agree. Ask in private. Asking in public in front of co-workers

and whatnot might be considered unprofessional on the job.

Well we chatted on face book as I have not had many hours at sylvan lately. We seem to be going through similar situations in life. I asked if she wanted to do coffee or something and she replied:

well if i ever have any free time we might be able to do that, as friends though. I dont know if u meant anything more by that but im not looking for anything right now. Trying to focus on myself at the moment.

don't shit where you eat! Going out with co-workers is always a bad idea, one of your will quit the job after a while. It will be awkward. I've never done that, I won't do it!

Yeah be careful mate. I tend to flirt a lot at work, but in a playful sense. The one occasion I did neg and try it on actually ended very badly. Had it occurred out of work with drinks I think it would have gone differently, however she felt got at and has soured our relationship.
Saying that lots of couples get together through work, so if you both like each other it may well happen naturally, but be cautious on your approach.
