How to deal with passive aggressivenes individuals in groups

I'm a member of many social groups in my city. Its come to my attention that there are many toxic individuals in these groups. Toxic people: People who are passive aggressive and will attempt to gossip about you/try to tear you down without any provocation.

Are there any suggestions for dealing with this? Leaving said groups is not optimal. My city has a very number of women that go out looking for fun. [Most stay in]

Confrontation...

So many people are passive aggressive becuase its easier than simply confronting a person...less risky.

Thats not always possible when you're in the same social meetup groups. They don't exist as a majority in the group but they're toxic members of the group.
