Forget books, simply talk to people - the more the better.
Simple talking to people will, over a long enough period of time doing trial and error, eventually work. At some point.
Personally I talked to people all the time while I was in high school, college, and now as well. I don't always know what to talk about and sometimes the conversation runs dry and I'm just drawing a blank. Then I end up asking close ended questions, or trying to get back to a topic we recently discussed. Talking to people and just doing that isn't enough.
Recently I've watched all of South Park on netflix, as well as all of breaking bad, a bunch of anime's, etc.. I started to notice conversations were getting a lot easier after watching that cause it's something to talk about that other people like to talk about. So I went back to netflix and looked up the list of shows that're popular on netflix and watched even a few I didn't care for to see what it's all about. Simple watching these has helped my conversation because it's a pool of things to talk about.
I've also summarized a few stories about my life DHV stories. Someone already noted this. In my experience telling a story about something fun and exciting is good if it gets interrupted but people are still interested in it. If you catch someone's interest they'll ask questions about it. If these questions lead to other topics, you have more to talk about. Just be cool and don't force the idea of finishing your story, cause they might come back to it. If not oh well it still brought other things to talk about.
The cube in the dessert seems to interest most people I talk to [which you can look up online]. But some girls are on to it
. This gives something to keep the convo going.
Read the news and keep up with current events also. You here about Jason Russel? Crazy right. It's something to talk about also. Or some article you read on cnn.com about something you find interesting. I read one about cocain found in a nasa shuttle hanger and that was interesting to talk to people about.
Mostly all I've said was to have knowledge of interesting things to talk about.
Do that and talk to more people as well.
But there are also techniques of how to talk to people, I don't know a whole lot about them.
Does anyone else know more about this?
