The direct opener could work too, because it's not a club where girls get picked up all the time, but it's kinda risky because you can get the "thank you" response, which where I come from means "ok, GTFO". It'z not risky at all if you open a girl who'z naturally attracted(curious) to you. In those cases the females want you to approach.

Where I come from, there are almost no girls who are looking for someone to approach on a mall, if they are there, they have a purpose (most of times bying shit). Dunno if in America they call their friends and just hang out, but here the max that can happen is go watch a movie.

-trying not to look like a stalker, if a HB is in a store looking at something as you pass by, almost every time, a woman is picturing how that would look on her (example shes looking at shirts in macys or some shit)
simply just walk up as she looks at the clothing and say
"you know, that would look good on you. actually that depends, what color are your eyes?"
INSTANTLY she will have a smile on her face and there will be some triangular gazing.... she will be wondering who the fuck you are BUT you snap her mind out of it, and pull back and you ask her name and jog the conversation from there. USUALLY you dont even have to neg her at all and can usally get number close.
i had this experience once where a woman had a boyfriend (about 50 yards away lol) and i still had a number close, SAME SITUATION but i didnt follow through... potheads piss me off anyways.

I don't go to the mall very often anymore as I'm getting out of the age range to make it worth going, but when I do I use a laid back, low-key style. Find a bench either along the main walkway or in the bookstore. Sit down with a book or magazine (your own or one from the store) and just relax until a girl comes along.

Catch her eye and open with something situational base on your observation of her. Or show her the cover of what you're reading and ask her what she thinks (it should be something strange and interesting which will be able to spark more conversation).

When the mall is busy and you have good body language the girl will usually just sit down on a bench near you or on the other side of the bench you're sitting on. This will buy you about 5-10 minutes before she gets back to whatever she was doing and is more than enough time to get her number.

Or you can go with regular game walking around and practicing with the girls working at shops. They are paid to be nice to you so even if your game isn't great it should lift your spirits enough to run at least one good set. That said, mall game is difficult because most guys are going to be trying to game (emphasis on the word try) and it is going to raise her defenses.

An approach that seems to work, along the same lines as my other approach, is to bring an interesting prop that makes people take notice, but at the same time you don't even mention unless it is brought up in conversation.
