What is a good way to respond when a targets friend asks if I like the target?
It's definitely a tough situation to be put in. Usually the situation presents itself when the target is not in the area and cannot hear the conversation, in which case things are a little bit easier to handle and the pressure isn't on as much to come up with a good answer.
If the target isn't there, you can respond with pretty much anything. The girl is almost certainly asking you because either:
a) Your game has worked and the target is interested in you. (Most often the case)
or
b) You have come on too strong and the group is suspicious that you are into the girl. (Not really that big of a deal, definitely fixable)
Some of the other posts suggest good ways to deal with the situation. I would loosen some of the tension with some humour, personally, exactly as some of the other posts said. Joke that you are in love with the target, or confess your attraction to the random girl who never talks, or say you are devoted to some random girl that walks by. Make them laugh.
Don't give a definitive 'yes' or 'no' answer. Saying yes may hinder your success with the target based on the 'forbidden fruit' syndrome (people want what they can't have, but as soon as they can have it, it's old news). Flat out saying no may discourage the target completely and she may just give up or lose interest. I would keep it as a 'mysterious' and vague response that could go both ways. Another poster suggested smiling and winking, which leans more towards 'yes' but still may imply 'who knows'. You could say "we'll see how things go" or "why, are you making sure I'm not committed?". Something humourous and light to break up the tension and leave the group without a straight answer.
