| Yea, I had really bad acne in high school, and I went on the accutane course as well. The accutane really is only for the last resort kinda med. It's really strong, but has lots of negative side effects associated with it. In order to get it you must see a dermatologist.
When I was on it, I was required to get a blood test done every month to monitor my kidneys and functions of all that. My derm DISCOURAGED drinking while I was on it, as it only adds stress to your liver which will already be under a lot of stress from the accutane. Also it can cause birth defects, so women have to go through a lot more in order to be able to take it (2 different types of BC, and various other things). You also cannot give blood while on the course, nor for a certain amount of time once finished with it. (I think its 1 year, but I'm not sure)
Some side effects that I had were really really REALLY dry lips. I always had to have chap stick or lip balm with me, and applied it at least 50 times a day. I pretty much lost all the feeling in my lips. Kinda like having chapped for the whole time that your on it. (One course is generally 6 months long depending on the severity of your acne). Also some other side effects I had were really dry skin, so had to moisturize everyday, and sore joints and back, so physical activites were a little bit more of a chore. There are other possible ones, but I did not get them.
I had to go on accutane twice actually. The first time it worked great, within 2 or 3 months my acne was pretty much gone. After the course I felt great...but about 4 or 5 months later, it started to come back again, and go so bad that I decided to do another course of accutane. The second time around went wonderfly, and with a few less side effects.
It has now been 8 months since I took the course, and I'm relatively acne free. About 5 months afterwards I did start to see some popping back up, but I've started a Benzoyl Peroxide routine that keeps it at bay, so other than the occasional pimple or two, I'm good. The routine I use for washing my face and stuff now can be found at acne.org. My only complaint now is that I have some scarring leftover, but I will have to take care of that soon as well.
Well I hope this helps. If your considering accutane, just make sure you research it first, and decide whether or not you are willing to go through all of the negative things that come along with it. I am glad that I did it, and have a lot more confidence now that my skin is clear.
