suppose there is a weekly activity that you go to every week. after like 5 months of this, you start to talk to a girl at this place. she asks "how come all this time you never talked to me?" (which is a reasonable question, I think)
what is a good response to that?

R.C. -s answer is good.

The thing is here. It doesn't matter. You could have had a girlfriend, lost your voice etc. anything. She doesn't have to know the reason. The thing is now you are talking about here, past doesn't matter. This should be you mindset.
