I get too many PM's from people asking about quality of pics. I advocate using a DSLR quality pic as opposed to a camera phone. People just don't do it, let me show the difference:

Image look at the difference!

Get ahold of a better camera. You can hire someone, ask a friend, buy one. Up to you. Figure something out.

Image

I see too much of this crap. Don't do it.

I know it's an inconvenience to get a hold of these camera's and dressing in your best clothes, but you can get this done by the weekend and you will see a dramatic increase in matches and dates from doing this one simple thing that will give you passive pussy for as long as you have dating profile(s). This is what my pics look like and I can easily not to step foot infield ever again (If i wanted to do that) and still be happy with my love life.

Get it done. No excuses.

Why don't you add this to your sig?
I am doing my best to stop the flood of PM's I get asking to critique their profile only to discover, the worst and laziest pics that a male human can possibly use...

You can buy a camera and lens from a retailer and just return it within 2 weeks after taking a bunch of pics. I will say this though, as someone who takes pictures of his friends for linkedin and online dating profiles....sometimes a smartphone camera is better than a DSLR. A super sharp DSLR photo can show your acne more, and wrinkles. A less sharp (not blurry) picture can often give an average looking guy a more flattering picture. If you want to take a quality photo with a dslr, you should learn how to edit photos as well or know someone who can. I won't say it would take a weekend though, as most guys by themselves dont have a clue on posing, smiling or lighting to get a good shot from a dslr. And if a friend takes one with no experience, its like the blind leading the blind. I like Dragula's overall point of putting some effort into taking a good picture, I just dont believe the average guy can with an expensive camera. So I'll just add that IF you are serious about online dating, put the work in and get a good picture. Even if you have to pay someone. Or buy a camera and practice.

Yeah that's what I'm saying...there's not a quick fix from just using a dslr. Like the 2 pics of the guy with the dog, the dslr picture uses a lens more suited to portraits, it's edited, better posed and framed better. Someone with just a dslr and no knowledge would take the same picture as the smartphone one; it would just be sharper. And then again only sharper if the camera guy knows how to use the lens or has a tripod. I've given friends my camera to take photos of me and they don't come out well due to blur, poor composition and bad focus. So I'm agreeing with what you're saying; use a dslr...ONLY if you put some time in to figure out how to use it correctly and edit it correctly. If you're just gonna snap a picture, a smartphone will give a better picture because they are more geared to portraits.

I really like your post about camera quality and lazy pics.
I have a suggestion though, I think DSLR are by far the best cameras. But they can be a pain in the butt to find someone with one or several hundred dollars to purchase.

However there are lens for smartphones that cost next to nothing (10-20$) that actually give really good picture quality! Do they give the Rebel DSLR quality? No, but they look SO SO good I would say 90% as good. I don't know if links are allowed so check out amazon guys, "smart phone clip on lenses".

Not sure on the quality of the lens clips, but I like your thinking, if it adds better quality than a standard pic, then it's a good shout.

I think neo87 makes a good contribution for those looking for a quick fix. Some of the smartphones on the market are really quite nice, actually. If you have the money, invest in a few shots. If not, I think a good phone shot should work, too.

A good photo doesn't just mean it's super sharp. True, most smartphones made during the past few years typically have great cameras. But I think guys believe DSLRs are this magic pill to great photos. A DSLR is GREAT, but it has many limitations. When you see a great pic with a dslr it's seldom done JUST with a good camera. Like dragula's first dslr pic, you're kidding yourself if you think that's just a dslr. You're missing the $300 external flash the photographer used, the off camera assistants to hold shade over the guy to manage the shadows, the $500 portrait lens. Go on youtube and look for a beginner's photo shoot and see how many things come into play. Good photos can help your online results immensely, but for most people a weekend with a base dslr is not enough. Even if you get a lens clip for your smartphone, put some thought into how you smile, the angles and how you pose. A picture of yourself isnt a good picture because the camera has X megapixels. Its a good picture when you take the time and put consideration into getting a good picture.

Free way to have a DSLR for a couple weeks...go to BB and sign up for the cred card. Get a DSLR on the cred card. You have 2 weeks to return. No fees no interest once you return it. See how a dslr works. Thats how I got my first dslr and found out it was not what I thought.

The way i did it. My friend has a DSLR camera and is pretty competent when it comes to it's setting and lighting conditions.

So 4/5 of us arranged a meet up the following weekend, literally took 1000+ pics then uploaded them to drop box and then picked the winners. We also brought another bag of clothes for a different style on round 2

We then all voted out of 5/6 pics which ones were the best for each other.

Then, we edited the pics, we used the blemish tool and did little tweaks to the pics and made the pics perfect. It was a little effort but my friends and I are always getting dates from Tinder.

Sometimes I get PM's from members on this forum, they send me pics that are grainy and blurry, it's really insulting since they think a quick 6 second snap and upload will generate tons of passive pussy for them considering the length I had to go to, to obtain these pics.

Put in the effort more than the average guy, then you get the above average girls. This goes the same with everything else with pick up.

Maybe you haven't got a friend with a camera, but if you all chip in and hire someone off craigslist or something, you could easily obtain these kind of pics without reading a 60 page manual of a DSLR camera. I am pretty sure you could hire someone for the day for $100. If there is 4 of you, then that is $25 each.

I know it's embarrassing walking around taking pics of each other, it doesn't feel manly at all. But I am glad I did it.

All joking aside, good contribution. Putting in just a little more effort goes a long way.

The main reason I'd strongly suggest a camera over a smart phone, comes down to focal length. Neo is right that a DSLR can highlight flaws in the skin, but it won't distort the face. Phones DO distort the face, and not in a good way(especially for men). It makes your face rounder. This is mostly because of distance. Phones pictures are taken right on top of you, and that does not go well. A camera should be at *least* 8 feet away from you, and I'd say 10+ is preferable. You stand ten feet away with a phone, and you're going to have a grainy piece of crap.

You can also sidestep some of that "too much clarity" issue, by buying an older camera. I find the older cameras like Nikon D90s and D700s are actually beautifying. At least if you have a good prime 50mm lens.
