I spent a couple hours this weekend doing daygame, got 4 numbers from about 20 direct approaches, and I came away with some observations/thoughts:
Firstly well done!

1. How do you connect with young (teen, early 20s) girls as an older man (I'm 26)? I seem to do much better with girls in their mid to late 20s and early 30s who are much easier to hold conversations with because of their greater life experience.[/quote]
Banter more. Women love to flirt. Tease them about how young they are. Also do you reach the hook point before you start the investment and rapport stage? This is a mistake I often see guys doing, jumping straight into comfort. I approach women from 18-35/maybe 40 depending on the looks. They all love to flirt. The rest is just details. Obviously there is a time to connect and be real but I found the majority of it is flirty banter, you almost don't need to know her life goals and archetype of her perfect guy, yet (maybe on the first date). Check out Tom Torero's channel on flirting and banter, I daygamed with him and he is fucking out of this world bro. Anyways

2. What is the benefit of having a so-called "i-date"? I probably could have pulled it off at least once during my approaches, but I see no benefit unless you're shooting for a same day lay. I'd rather save that conversation for the first date.
Only go for the I-date if you think there is a definite chance for a SDL(mostly with yes girls or strong maybe girls). Most beginners go on I-dates and sink into the "comfort quicksand" or rapport and don't break rapport at all thus falling quickly into the friendzone or gay best friend box. Both parties are then left confused at what just happened. If done right it definitely increases the buying temperature of the girl.

3. Is direct approaching in the street really that different from doing it in say a mall? I struck out 9 times in a row on a street near a college campus downtown, then switched to a mall and got the number of a HB7 on the first try.
It is impossible to tell, maybe a couple of guys where running a bootcamp next to/close to that campus and burnt that area out. Daygame is meeting and attracting women in the daytime, whether it'sin cafe's malls or on the street. I always think venue has moods just like people. Remember that street requires different calibration to the malls (you can't do the front stop because of security) from malls to seated cafe girls. Just always remember that venues can be burnt out bro
I approach girls in Cape Town, where there is a high crime rate so naturally you'll think "fuck you can't approach then" WRONG
I just have to use extra emphasis on my pre-frames (don't panic I'm not a robber/salesmen is my favourite)
Let me know if you need anymore help man, I'll gladly help you.
