Basically, I just started  but I'm slowly getting there. Today, I was having lunch with my mate, and we were both turning our backs against two nice ladies behind me. So I kinda went for it and tried a really silly opener, inspired by Style, and asked them to think of a number between 1 and 10. Of course, they chose something completely different, at which point I turned my back to talk a bit to my mate, and after 3 minutes(counting :) ) I turned around, ready to ask them how they know each other etc., but as my first words left the mouth, I realised they are already talking about something else and did not hear me.

So the question is, how long should have I waited, or even, was it right of me to turn my back temporarily? Should I next time just carry on?

cheers :D

Next time carry on! Once you have their attention continue to work with the conversation, and go into the "How do you all know each other?" You instincts were right as to what to say, just keep it going next time. :)

Carry on - and work on speaking louder.

cheers guys, should I also work on talking slow? I talk quite fast, since my thought processes are quicker than what I say and I often start to talk fast. It is comprehensible, but fast. Would that be a problem too?

Yeah, slow it down some. Slower creates a bigger impact and gets ingrained in people's heads more.

Talking is also a major sign of insecurity. People who talk fast tend to either talk fast because they believe they can finish what they are saying quicker to keep people's attention, or that they have way to much to say in the first place. Learn to talk slow and enuciate. Make them remember what you said.

Haha! Yeah, I talk fast sometimes, not because I'm trying to get it out before other people cut me off, or I lose their attention, because you tend to keep their attention better if you talk slow, but because I always have WAAAAY too much to say and it just all wants out, it's like a dam bursting. I wish I could communicate as fast as I think, that's my problem.

Yeah, Lee I used to be the same way. However, ironically I was able to change that in speech class. Like with my friends I was a great orator but around others I wasn't. I just decided to say fuck the crowd. Slow down my speech, and enuciate. I realized that the way you say certain words or end sentences can leave a major impact on your audience.
