If you only feel good about approaching when your friends are around that means you are emotionally dependent and you are not a leader. The leader is the guy who does as he does when no one is watching.
However, I'm willing to bet that you haven't attempted approaching half as much as you have attempted it when your friends are there. It's dull in the beginning, but after about 5-6 approaches it feels a lot better than it felt when you friends were there because your free. You're not leaning on anyone and no one is leaning on you. I personally love going out alone. Going with friends is cool too, but theres nothing like getting the job done solo.
Its easy approaching when the cameras are on or when there is people watching. You have some support, you have something to lean on and there is motivation ( youtube views, popularity, money, impressing others etc.) the real challenge comes when its just you. No one to impress, no one to watch.. Thats when your real character shows.
I wrote two articles.. One called " Be Who You Are While Alone" & " The Players Guide To Going Out Alone" that cover this topic.
