The old me would be to say 'fuck social conditioning bla bla' and do it. There is still an element of truth to it but come on, why fabricate your thoughts like this?

I don't get why you are asking really...what if you have a crush on Barrack Obama's wife? Do you have to approach her and tell her that you would be kicking yourself all day if you didn't try?

the problem is, I cant tell the difference between being inappropriate vs. ballsy.
I cant tell if I am just being a bitch or if I have a valid excuse for not approaching.

I've gotten up and tried my luck in these situations several times. Not exactly with my parents there, but with the girls parents there. But if my parents were there, I grew up with a dad that would encourage this type of courageous behavior so long as i'm respectful.

I'd simple introduce myself to the parents and save the girl for last. I'd then make my pitch. Its works at times and it's failed during others.

But what I do find is, the more courageous the action the more likely a woman is going to find you attractive. You have to think... How many guys are going to do such a thing? So how special does that make you in her mind. You're rare and if she misses this opportunity she may never get it again.
