I have a theory. women like alpha males just because they are different. everybody is beta, except alphas.

in other words, if most men were alpha, then women would like nice guys.

It's evolutionary. They are programmed in a certain way, just as we are. It would possibly take millions of years to undo what you are speaking of.

In the animal world, the alpha is the best, the fittest, the one with the best genes, the best bet for mating and ensuring the female fit and strong babies... The existence of alpha and the preference of ladies for alpha in human societies are the biological legacy of the these animal behaviors...One cannot escape behaviors that have been the rule for billions years, and are encoded deep inside our genomes... for survival and the greater good of the species...

How come most men may be alphas? it is just impossible... sounds like an oxymoron to me... It is like you are saying "if all athletes were equally good and finished the race at the same time, there would be no loser"... Sure but it is not how it works... There has to be winners and ... losers...
I get your point though... But we are talking metaphysics here.. not reality... That said, it is just my personal opinion...

More important perhaps, the "nice guy" is the one who tries to balance out his weaknesses by behaviours that are evolutionary unfit... So somehow, being a nice guy is acknowledging one's own genetic (or behavioral) weaknesses and acknowledging he is not an alpha...
