what does everyone think about opening with a joke

ie; Hey girls wanna hear a funny joke I just heard and then insert joke

good idea bad idea

and if its a good idea how would i transition into normal convo

Well the joke will work if it's funny. If you arn't very confident or funny then it won't work. But like I watched a video today and the guy walked up to a 3set and said "OMG I was gonna wear the exact same thing" to this girl, the whole group laughed. You can then introduce yourself, kino handshake maybe and do what you normally would do.
