I think it's because they don't want to get hurt. They probably get called names on a daily basis and when they DO tell someone that they like them they get rejected because of their looks.

This develops into a thicker 'barrier' for the girl since she's been rejected so many times; she acts like she doesn't care or she just wants to make the man chase her instead of the other way around.

Basically I think they just turn from giving compliments to negging in order to get validation from better looking guys. I guess fat girls are a type of their own.
