How do the reputation points work on this site?

I've noticed that you lose points when you award points to other people, why is this?

I've also noticed I've got twice as many posts up as some people but only half the reputation. What's up with that? Is it something to do with the little punk that retaliated against me modding him down a month ago? :?:

Actually speed-bird your negative points were well deserved its what you get for giving somebody negative rep points

By giving negative rep you solved absolutely nothing other than basically saying Fuck u. And acknowledging the fact your paying attention to what that person is doing.

Thats all I got to say about that!!

Yeah Thugnificant, you got it.
No real point taking away points unless they are being offensive. Noobs will learn, so don't take away points for being ignorant.

Yeah i remember that. Its when you voted against Trojanman and he retailated by taking points from you. I remember about 7 other people had given him negative votes too.

You get extra points the longer you've been on the forum aswell, so its not just from posts and votes. Im not sure if you get anything for PM's though or popular threads.

That's a very poor attitude. Maybe you should re-think this stance, cause if someone were to give you negative rep points because you were giving poor advice, then it is well deserved and you need to examine your actions and correct them. If they are just doing it to be a douche, then I could see your reasoning aside from the fact that there would be no point, you would just lower your value more and if you were to do the exact same thing in real life, where someone had told you to stop being a jackass and you in turn called him a jackass, he'd probably kick your ass.

Exactly. The guy was being a dick, everyone else was complaining about him (except for one) so I (and a few others) modded him down. Instead of taking the advice on board, he lashed out and retaliated by modding other people down. He deserved his negative points, I didn't. Is there some way the system can be made to prevent this kind of retaliation?

There might be a way to fix those kinds of problems, I know that a complete record of everyone that has voted on you/you voted on, is able to be viewed by the mods (not sure about regular users) and so I'm sure it would be possible to undo one vote. The real question though, is why? Honestly, the only time I cared about rep points, was when I was becoming the person with the most rep on the site (aside from Brad and his 999999999999 gaggillion or course, lol) and when me and Tripp were seeing who would hit 100 first. I think if rep points are keeping you awake at night, then you need to take a week off from the site to help put things in perspective! :P

It's not keeping me up at night, hence my original comment "Yeah it's no big deal, I was just curious is all."

Well said Ry. You know this reminds me of a quote that I still have to remind myself of sometimes.

Your wrong! I can't believe you'd believe that :-P

Reputation points are positively correlated to girl getting abilities. It's social proof ^.^
Hahaha, completely true! Let teh 1337 rule teh world! LMAO

But seriously, internet arguments can still be perfectly legitimate discussions and this being the information age and everyone being wired these days, making a good solid point on the net CAN have an impact on things. How many people in the world these days make all their money, or even part of their money online?

I'm not saying get into flame wars, or bicker over stupid shit, but solid discussions are worth while and are often under valued.

True true, but you don't have to get heated and argue to have a worth while discussion.
