Is it a good idea to mention other girls to a target on the phone or in person? Example Girl asks you what you did last weekend. You tell her you went on a date. To me it lets her know you have options. If she asks what happened I can tell her, I decided we should just be friends.

Well I'm actually going form MLTR. So I try not to talk about other girls, but make sure they know.
Try to say that you were hanging out with a friend, and than say something about how great it was, mentioning the date environment. She might ask if the freind was a guy or a girl, tell her it's this girl you've been seeing but it's nothing too serious.
Now she know's you're not taken, and cheating on someone, but you're also a prize. She might get into the female competitive phase and try to win you over. Always good.
So:
- don't be blunt about the date, have her think about it
- let her know about another girl, you're seeing her (avoid the word "kinda seeing" it will bury you), and that it's not exclusive
- don't talk about the other girl too much

Thanks, I had that situation last night on the phone. I handled it almost verbatim like you said, but I ended saying that I decided we were just going to be friends. She just said responded "oh one of those".

One thing though, even if you tell her that we ended up deciding just to be friends, make sure that it comes across like you made the decision (and that you do this often), so it doesn't seem that you got dumped.
Point is that you come across as a prize and that she needs to work for your interest.
It's a good angle though. I'm gonna be saying that I was on a date every time from now on
