I swear everytime i am on the train or in the subway waiting there is a very cute girl glued to her phone with ear buds in. I normally would just use a situational opener just whatever pops into my head, but how do you open a girl that is completely zoned out of the moment without looking like a fool? What have some of you guys done to overcome this barrier?

I've done this once and it went over pretty well, normally don't encounter this too much though.

If you wave your hand in front of her face or something like that, just to say hi, you come off as desperate (kinda, imo). So what you do, if she's in her own world and isn't looking around, tap her on the shoulder, get her to take off the ear buds and ask her "how do you listen to head phones that loud!?" After she answers, probably with "It wasn't that loud" tell her you could hear it across the room and tell her that she's going to go deaf like that. If she asks "what" or doesn't hear what you said at any time after that in the conversation be sure to pick on her "see I told you, you can't hear a thing!" in a real joking manner.

If your feeling really goofy you could walk up to her and pretend your talking just move your mouth while saying nothing. Then she takes the buds out and your still not making any noise just mouthing words. Then when she gets the confused/funny look on her face you finally say "I said, for the twentieth time, that listening to headphones that loud can make you go deaf..."

Anything funny like that I think is a good approach.

I think it fits in enough humor and enough report, and it gives you an excuse to bother her even though she is clearly focused on something else IE her phone video or whatever.

What I would do is tap her on her shoulder and make a gesture as if I'm pulling an earphone out of my ear. The girls I open always get the memo and comply. You can then open from there with:

• "What time is it? My watch is broken."
• "Did you see the Oscars last night? Ellen was so hilarious!"
• "I love Justin Beiber!" (A shit test: If she actually was listening to him, you could bust on her on how she's a "Belieber" . If not, then congratulations! You now have a common interest with her!)

I get in front of them or if they are looking down I put my hand in front them. Never fails to make them respond
