The orig. post reminds me of music: Some drummers have the sheet music in front of them and don't want to miss a single note. Others are more fluid - they play by feel and connect with the music on an emotional level when playing live. The second group of drummers have a more natural, free-flowing style. Same thing with pickup generally.
