I don't get the "how tall are you" opener? Isn't it rude/impolite to ask a stranger's height? What do you transition to after?

I'm sure it's not rude if they're not too short. They probably wouldn't like it if they were taller than you too because that would bring attention too something they don't want. However, I think you're right, and that's a pretty good segue. If she is embarrassed by it, tell her that it doesn't matter. Why are people so concerned with it? And if she just gives it to you, say that you're surprised she's so comfortable with telling you.

When they ask why, tell them some bs. Say that your little sister is about her height and that she's only 12. You could go a million places with that... none of them sexual -.- It would certainly be comfort building though.

However, I am short, should I still use the opener?

Yeah I wouldn't draw attention to height. That's like asking her if she has any moles. It's always going to be an issue. If a woman jokes about your height give her the playful line, "And I like Doritos... well we're both talking about shit that doesn't matter."

This is a terrible opener in my opinion. A good friend of mine is a 6'2" tall blonde chick who gets opened with that all the time and let me tell you, it NEVER works.
