Isolating the Target

Does anyone have any consistent techniques for isolating the target from obstacles without a wing?
How can this be done without offending the obstacle, and making the target feel bad for leaving without her friend? I have struggled with this when I am not with a wing.

"I'm gonna borrow your friend for 2 minutes!" and move her away from the group. Don't go to far away. Keep her within sight of her friend. Or, merge sets and be the guy who brings everyone together. Be social dude.
