I was talking to this girl today. either I am going deaf, or girl mumbles a lot. either way, I couldn't understand more than half the things she was saying.
what do you do when you can't understand someone? I am too embarrassed to say "I'm sorry?" every 5 seconds
another question i have for you is what exactly do you say when you cant understand someone, is it "I'm sorry?" or "pardon?" or "what did you say?"

Generally speaking you dial it on the keypad of your phone and talk into the receiver end.

I remember the time I was chatting some girl up outside in the city and when I asked her for her number she said " I'm a tourist, im not even from new york". So I said.. " How long are you going to be here? " She goes " Uh umm uh..." and I cut her off and say " Thats enough time right there ( Handed her my phone.) we'll go out tomorrow"


I know this isn't the same as your situation but I say that to say, take charge and be the leader. If you were a teacher teaching and one of your students raised their hand to give you an answer and they mumbled what would you say? Would you be too afraid to lead and ask them to speak up and repeat themselves? You're the man, you're the leader, take charge and ask for what you want.

...it's just what you feel in that moment.

Tell her what you're thinking 'i can't hear half of what you're saying, and I don't want to have to say 'what' every 5 seconds - so speak up a little bit'

I'd personally say this in a playful but leading way.
