At the risk of inciting the full fury of our resident flamer, I'm going to agree with Hellhound. There are actually controlled studies in which women were shown pictures of men which were digitally altered to change the degree of masculinity ("alpha traits"). Generally, the chumpasaur versions of the pictures were preferred to alpha versions of the pictures (same guys) for LTR/provider type relationships, while women preferred the alpha looking guys for mating/sex. It has also been shown that when women ovulate, they prefer men with higher test/alpha features for sex. The rest of the time they like the "softer" looking guys for provider roles. This is very easily explained through evolutionary biology, but I won't go in to details since a few people might storm in to take odds with the explanations. However these are the results of controlled studies.
It is true, women would rather fuck the alpha male and marry the chump.
Getting in to a relationship with a high value male is a dangerous proposition for a woman, because she faces constant competition from other women, and high test/alpha guys tend to cheat/sleep with as many women as possible. While we evolved naturally, this would mean that an alpha male was an unreliable provider and could flake on the girl at any time, while the chump would hold on and be a provider. However, the alpha has the superior genes, and makes better offspring. This is why women are hesitant about committing/falling for really good looking/alpha guys, but will gladly fuck them, while settling down with the chumpy types that provide them with material/provider security, which an alpha doesn't offer (he's busy playing the field).
