I guess I don't hear it very often (I just get stuck with the "sure we can hang out, but I have a boyfriend"). At that point i peace. Sure you might score, but it's more trouble than its worth, and if its a shit test, you want to stay away from someone like that in the first place. Generally girls with BFs that are interested will tell you nothing about the BF as long as they can hide it. The only girls with BF's I scored were ones about whose BF's I knew nothing about until after we hooked up. Obviously... you don't want to be LTRing those either... I have to say though, the qualifier "BUT you're cute", could get you a foot in the door. Though in my opinion, its more trouble than its worth, and you never know if their BF is in the UFC or the local drug cartel. Why put your ass on the line? If you're not ready to deal with a man of unknown aggression, size, and connections, why take the chance? This isn't much of a consideration in the US, but I grew up in a different country (think snow), and there if you were caught chasing after another man's girl, they'd come after you physically and you'd have to be ready to take them.
And I think HBs say that because they're more picky about men, and are less likely to hide that they have a bf when they get approached by someone they aren't very interested. Also, they're in higher demand, so I'd guess they're more likely to have a bf in the first place.
