I've had much success in simply taking out my phone as I'm talking to a girl mid-conversation, going to the keypad screen (I have an iphone), and interrupt the conversation by handing her the phone smiling and saying "You can give me your number" as if SHE'S the one that was lucky enough to have a chance to be part of my contact list.

Just avoid the awkwardness of asking for a number and just have her do it as you let the conversation flow naturally.

The best way to get get a girls number is to ask for it when she is in a state that causes her to be accepting of the idea.
So instead of at a random time when you feel like it just blurting out can i get your number. It is better to ask for it as a reaction to her state.
In short terms if she is laughing and having fun with you ask for the number. If she is bored and looking for a way out. don't ask for it you still have work to do.

i got my current girlfriends number by inviting her out with a group of friends of mine. i gave her my number and said call me if you want to come have fun. she ended up calling me obv. works well giving her your number and a choice to join you in a group. not much stress there. theres a chance she wont call but it has always worked for me that way

Giving her your number is an interesting strategy. I suppose it would work better if you had a chance to really sit and talk with her for a while first, and build some good rapport. So many of the girls whose numbers you get never answer the phone or call you back, so if you give her your number and she DOES call you back, then you at least know she is interested.
