What I do is I open, I then try to invest them in the conversation somehow (tell them they're cute and you want to talk to them for two minutes, ask them their name or something), and go from there. If we're lucky, some PUAs will post good ways of keeping girls in the set after they see this.

this doesn't really answer the question. What do you mean by "go from there"? that's too vague.

Just my opinion. You can open with an interesting social question like, What's there to do for fun around here?" than, So I was walking and seen you, and thought to myself, this girl is cute I have to meet her, I'm John" Her: blah blah You: So do you have the personality to back it up?

From there you can discuss comfort: So you seem different tell me about yourself? Or, So what are your passions in life. Than talk about yours and connect with her on that. Say, "Most ppl would just be in your work for your money but you genuinely like to help ppl I like that about you - probably my second favorite going about you"
