I have to take a graduation photo and I've got a dark grey suit I was going to wear with a white shirt. I don't know what color tie to wear with that. What are your thoughts? I also have a black suit but I was thinking of wearing that to the grad party.

Younger guys generally wear brighter coloured ties. A nice flashy blue or green. Or all black/grey with bright blue/green/pink stripes in them. That's the only thing in my wardrobe that I allow to be flashy.

dark suit and whit shirt will work best with a red or pink tie, this is common for politicians, it draws attention to your lips and encourages people to not only listen but also to remember what you say, if you dont fancy that its a good place to peacock, this time of year there is plenty of Christmas or generally outlandish ties on the market. hope this is helpfull

Red or black tie would go well with grey suit. One thing to remember though is that most guys have suits that are one size (or two) TOO BIG. Suits too big make you look small and sloppy. Ask a local tailor for an honest opinion.

As yomon said, ALWAYS have your suits tailored.

Funny though, I would suggest to wear any tie besides red/bright. Then again, it's more of a personal taste.
From the red gradients, pink would be the only one I would suggest with a dark grey suit.
All other colors with a white shirt would look fine, so you don't have anything to worry about.

Fabric is more important than color. Silk, wool, cashmere. Just don't go for the cheap silk- ask the seller how thick/heavy the silk is if you can't tell it yourself. If it's of good quality, hold it up from one side to make sure. If it just hangs, then it was cut correctly. If it starts turning, drop it right away. Check for any loose runs on the sides of the fabric. If they don't know, ask where it was made. When a tie is of high quality, color goes to the second shelf.

Design of the tie is very subjective. If I were you, I would NOT wear red or anything bright, would NOT wear stripes, would NOT wear anything checked, would NOT wear anything dotted, and would NOT wear anything with big geometric patterns.

This leaves for me almost all solid or ties with a small geometric pattern. By small geometric pattern, I mean something spaced very very closely. It also leaves knitted and woven ties, but don't wear those with a suit.

Can never go wrong with a solid tie, but it can sometimes be a little too plain, depending as well on your suit and how it's tailored. Make sure your tie doesn't conflict with the the pattern of your suit or shirt.
