Lame compliments like "I like your watch!" can indeed fuck off and die, but if you're direct, and show confidence, and tell someone you think they're pretty, then it CAN work.
actually, I think complimenting someone who works at a bank or at a checkout is lame, because you know that it's their job to be nice to you. so their reaction won't be genuine, they will be nice just because they want to keep their job. I personally think people who flirt with bank tellers and cashiers are lame.
