I know that people usually say that dating someone at the office will always end up badly. After all...the phrase goes "Dont sh*t where you eat"

However, I am here to question this thinking. I have always been against dating people at work, but I have been hearing more and more stories of people in committed relationships that met at the office or via work. It's no surprise because these are the people you spend most of your time each day with.

Is it that crazy to start liking someone that you work with? This came up bc my good friend started liking this girl at work. I initially warned him against it, but I have since been more open to it because it seems like they really like each other. The work aspect does interfere somewhat, because the girl is hesitant to move past making out because they work together. They don't even work on the same floor so I am not sure what else to tell him. How would you guys deal with this kind of resistance?

I just thought it was an interesting topic so I wanted to ask the community how they felt. Please don't just respond, work dating is a terrible idea. Deeper thoughts on this topic would go a long way.

It's natural to be attracted to someone you work with. How could you not be? You can't just turn off your biology.

I have messed around with 6-7 co-workers at my old store and a ton of customers, it can be really rough when you have issue with someone you work with outside of work. The problem isn't how it starts out the problem is how it usually ends up. Most relationships end they don't go the distance (half of marriages end in divorce) so if you are going to be going after women you work with be careful who you mess around with.

For some women it isn't a big deal, she can hook up with a guy and go on working no biggie. Same with some men but for others their emotional attachment and lack of emotional control will seriously make it impossible to work with that person. It's not the beginning that is the issue, the honey moon phase is a great phase but it is a phase.

If you end up in a serious relationship and you are fighting at home and then working together how are you going to separate those emotions in your work SPAM? I'm not saying a lot of people can't but most people can't separate or control their emotions, it's expected.

It all depends on the job and how good it is to be honest. If you are working at dead end job you don't need or care to keep then who cares? You plan on moving on anyways but when you are managing a store and their are whispers about you messing around with girls through out the store it can be a big problem.

Your reputation will proceed you if you hook up with multiple girls at work and most people will know about it quickly. In fact I kept everything on the DL and everyone else was saying I messed around with all these other women I never touched.

I think it is a bad idea personally based off of past experiences. Very few people have the maturity to handle a relationships in the work place and that is really why it is a horrible idea to do it. Most people can't keep it separate the two, and because of this I find it to be a bad idea to repeat some of these past learned experiences.

Peace and Love

Vic

Thanks a lot Vic for that helpful advice. I think you're spot on in your assessment and that the potential negatives would outweigh the positives. Not everyone can handle a relationship like that so it's probably best to just avoid it all together.
