Just start making conversation with more people. Start with people who "have to" talk to you: cashiers, salespeople, waitresses. Get used to it. Then work your way up to just saying "hi" to strangers. Don't think about picking up at first. Just overcome your fear of talking to people.
Again, if you put this much time and energy into a girl you saw on a bus one week ago, you are not going to have the smoothness and confidence to pull it off. Instead, put smaller amounts of energy into a lot of different people.
