So I heard about turning your biggest flaw into an asset and thought about using my lack of confidence as an opener. What do you think of the following opener?:
'Hey, I was wondering if you could do me a favour. I'm trying to overcome my chronic shyness and lack of confidence issues by approaching various strangers and striking up random conversation with them and I was hoping you would humour me for a few seconds'.

The target might see you as refreshingly honest. I would say after an opener like that you would deffinately stack forward straight away and make sure what ever you say next is very interesting with some good embedded DHV's

So even if it's actually true depending on what you say next it will make it sound very ironic and funny. So i would be sure to have a backpack of confidence to carry on after such opener

I might change the line somewhat to something like this: "Hi! I am trying to cure my chronic shyness by talking to random people. My name is Bob. How am I doing so far?"
The only problem is that if you are not shy, this comes off as a much too clever pickup line and won't work. If you are shy, I can foresee many conversations and even a few hugs out of using this, but it strikes me that escalating from that point will be tough.
So, I would say use it as a newbie mission and confidence builder and then move to another approach.
