There are those of us on the forum that have goals and those of us that have dreams or desires. A dreamer may say, "I want to loose weight" or "I want to make 100,000" or "I want to be a PUA." All those things are fine but they are dreams not goals.

Goals are specific, measurable, have a time frame, and are written down. Simply put the difference between those who have goals and those who have dreams is the written game plan for achieving a measureable specific goal.

1. When setting actual goals you want to define what your goal is so that you know it when you cross the finish line. This again shouldn't be vague it should be specific.

2. Make a plan for the path you need to follow to complete the goal. If for example only you know that for every 5 sets you open you get 1 phone number, and your goal is to get 10 phone numbers by the end of the month. You know that you need to open 50 sets within 4 weeks or roughly 12 sets a week to obtain that goal. Again, the plan needs to be specific with measurable quantities to hit your goal.

You want to have a timeline for your plan. Just saying "I want to loose 10 pounds" is not enough, and it won't happen. You want to set a timeline for when you are going to loose the weight by so you can hold yourself accountable. It also also you to perform checks at various intervals during your timeline to see if you are on pace to achieve your goal.

3. Commit to achieving your goal by writing it down. This is where 90% or more fail. Lee Iacocca said, "The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen." I agree completely. Write down the plan, the action steps and the critical path. Somehow, writing down the goal, the plan and a timeline sets events in motion that may not have happened otherwise. In my own life, it is as if I am making a deeper commitment to goal accomplishment. I can’t fool myself later. The written objective really was the goal.

In addition to the plan force yourself to write down WHY you want to accomplish your goal. This helps you on your path to remember the motivational reasons why you want to do what it is you are doing. Writing down the WHY reasons further helps you to remember WHY this is important to YOU.

4. I mentioned this before but... establish times for checking your progress in your calendar system, whatever it is: a day planner, a PDA, a PDA phone or a hand written list. If you’re not making progress or feel stymied, don't let your optimism keep you from accomplishing your goals. No matter how positively you are thinking, you need to assess your lack of progress. Adopt a pessimist’s viewpoint; something will and probably is, going to go wrong. Take a look at all of the factors that are keeping you from accomplishing your goal and develop a plan to overcome them. Add these plan steps to your calendar system as part of your goal achievement plan.

5. Review your overall progress regularly. Make sure you are making progress. If you are not making progress, hire a coach if needed, have a buddy help you be accountable, and analyze why the goal is not being obtained by looking back to your measurable information. What are you not doing to obtain your goal?

Goal setting is very different from making what I call "dreamer" statements. Many of us come to the forum and we all make dreamer statements like "I want to get laid by a girl I've never met before" "I want to make out in a club" or "I want to get X number of lays." It's okay we all do it, but remember this is all just smoke and mirrors until we turn these into goals.

Good post Jon.

There will always be people with the personality traits that succeed in life due to dedication and persistance. These people will live to their potential. The rest either dream or just slide by in life scraping the bottom of the barrel to survive. Some try, hit a wall and give up, these are the dreamers. The steps you give are great but people need that certain mentality to achieve hard goals. I think this kind of dedication can be gained throughout life, but the majority does not have it.
