I, admittedly, use facebook as a crutch too... but it works so damn well. Usually what I do is just send them a message about a mutual interest and make it something that they have to respond to (ask a question). After a couple messages I'll say something like "Enough with this facebook shenanigans, what's your number?" This works even better if she sends you the initial message. Good luck!
