He's onto something here. When I first started coming out of my shell, that's where I'd get a lot of my interaction and break away from awkward conversation. It's easy to ask an employee where something is in a store and make casual conversation along the way and see what's offputting or working based off of their answers. Really good practice before you venture out into the world.
Also, focus on smiling too. People are naturally drawn to happy, pleasant people. Work on always having a natural "at rest" smile on your face and you may even get approached (at least this is true for me).
