Hey guys,

So I was just wanting to get your opinions on how you treat your friends and how you let them treat you.

I have a close knit circle of friends and would say I am generally quite picky of my friends. Someone must earn my respect for them to become my friend but I'm unsure whether this is most beneficial for me.

You see, I currently have this friend who is quite annoying. He puts me down a lot and although I have dominance over him I don't really gain much from him. I see friendships similar to relationships. It's all about give and take. He doesn't offer anything to me and I do favours for him. For example he is hitching a ride back from College soon which is like a 3 hour drive. Now if your in the UK you might know about the petrol prices here. It will cost me ~25 pounds for this journey and I just know he won't even offer to give me some cash for taking him home. Now to me that isn't what friends are for. He expects a free ride. I don't mind giving him a ride but for him not even offering is just rude.

So I think I'm going to distance myself from this guy.

What are your thoughts? Are you picky about who you let be your friend or not?

Meh.

I don't worry too much about it. When you think about "give and take" too literally, you end up backtracking through years of life thinking of each favor you did for someone and what they did for you. Friendship isn't a balance sheet. If you want gas money, for instance, ask for it. That's the biggest deal to me: friends should be able to talk openly and honestly to eachother without fear of quick anger.

Do you actively try to be dominant over your friends? Because to me, that's just strange. But I had a similar case a few years back. I became friends with a freshman at my college during my third year, and even though I was inviting him out to the parties, he would try to take control of the situation and boss me around. It was his way or the highway. So after a few instances of this, I just told him straight up that we were friends, and it didn't seem right for him to get so angry every time things didn't go exactly his way. He was a bit angry at first, but the next day he was agreeing with me. We were bros, and we couldn't be at odds like that.
