well I had heard condoms weren't reliable.

I have had condoms break but you can usually feel it when it happens, a bad condom feels dry and if you are fucking with a dry condom you are begging for babies so to speak.
Also different brands of condoms are very different in quality, I have never had an issue with Durex or Trojan, but cheaper brands break all the time. Also, the older the condom the more risk of breaking!
If you are really scared, simply don't cum inside her when she is ovulating, problem solved!
