I used to be like this.
But the trick is to do it in public places - where if you fail - there will be no connection back to you. It's bad to do it on campus because if you fail she may tell her friends which may get back to you.
While in public, and you want to talk to her just making a casual approach and monitor for positive signs. And make sure you go through each stages before you close and get her number. And don't stay too long talking to her. Just make it quick so you can text her later.
