Sorry to offend dude, but I've been there myself and I know a certain amount about religion. As for it not being a valid generalisation, well why do religious girls not believe in sex before marriage if it's not because they've been told it's not okay? Do you think they came to that conclusion independently?
To be honest if you read any psychology you'd know its generally accepted that morals come from culture and culture only. Their culture is just different to yours because of their family they are brought up in, same way that if you were brought up in a conservative Muslim family in the middle east you would think women are worth less than men or if you grew up in the middle ages you'd think public beheadings aren't barbaric ect.

I think it's because they want to save what they see as a sacred gift for one man that they love, rather than blowing it on meaningless sex with a bunch of guys. Nothing to do with repeating what they've been told. And I have a ton of respect for anyone who has that kind of self-control.
