Just another opinion opener that seems to work really well for me. "I need a woman's expertise. What is the better Christmas gift for mom, White pearls or black?". Then go on about how you were looking at necklace with matching ear rings for mom...bla bla bla. I tested that one out a couple of times and got at least ten mins of conversation out of it.
