Oh god...fuckin hate prom as a concept. I honestly didn't go to mine. But I can give you tips I witnessed on what not to do:

1. don't have other people ask for you.

That's all I got. Don't make a big deal of it. Fact is most girls probably have already decided if they'd go with you or not. The way you ask will not have much impact on whether they say yes or not unless you ask in a bitchass way liek point 1.

Prom is kind of a fucking pain in the ass. Mostly because it's in high school when girls are still hormonal, touchy, PMSing whores (alright, fine, for some girls that never changes). Fuck me do I hate prom. And fuck that "superman that hoe" song by that little black kid who hates soldiers. At least you're guaranteed to get laid that night. I've had a few to drink tonight so pardon the anger. Now let's answer your question.

The easiest thing to do is to ask a female friend or acquaintance to go with you. The longer you've known her, the better off you'll be. It's actually good to be in the friend zone for this kind of thing, because she'll have a higher chance of saying yes and you'll still probably end up getting laid, possibly even negating the friend zone. If you think there's some proper way to ask, there's really not. Just make sure you ask in person, texting is for bitches.

Simply go up to her and strike up a conversation. Find a good point in the conversation to ask if she's going to prom with anyone yet. If she says no, say something like "Well then, let's go together" and see what she says. The cool part is, since she's your friend, she'd feel like a complete c-word to turn you down so your chance of rejection is quite low.

That's pretty much the strategy I used for both proms I went to. It was the conservative route, but it still worked and I actually ended up dating both girls after that.
