THIS DOES NOT MEAN BE REACTION SEEKING. You are not trying to MAKE her feel anything. You're using her reactions to your behavior to discover her personality. If a cocky/funny line doesn't work well, don't worry about it. It only starts to matter once a bunch flop in a row. That means you're missing something about your target.
