I am a strong beleiver that "canned material" and sometimes "material" in and of itself is great when your starting out. Its meant to automate your vocal communications so that you can work on body language, tone, posture, emotions, etc. Remember that most of what you communicate is not siad in your words.
I think once you start to develop a persona and embody it then you should shift into your own "material", the nice thing about your true stories and such is that when you work on them you are developing your story telling skills which is an important tool.
You will also develop improv skills this way as if someone calls you out on a part of the story or something you will better be able to handle it, or improv and lie on the spot
By all means if you have a story that works and isnt really 'true you", use it. Im not saying that all a PUA's stuff should be from the heart so to speak, but it helps turn your outter game in.
If im not mistaken VNH is realativly the same as MM. Id read threw VNH/MM and then hit up Magic Bullets. Body language stuff will probably be useful but you can start simple without the books. Shoulders back, chin "up", walk naturally, make EC and hold it (smile), Smile (dont over do it). Work on those while working on aproaching and working with your material and routines.
As for dealing with your study/sarge ratio...If you find yourself doig something that you logically find counter productive (or the least productive of your options), then correct the behavior.
Are you gonna get women by sitting at the computer studying? Or do you need to go out to do it? Ask yourself what your goal is and then do what best satisfies metting those requirements.
Doc and XFman both posted excellent pattern destroying techniques. In other words ways to get ride of bad behavior and to get yourself doing the proactive thing.
Hope this helps.
