Just a general question about the popular IOI that involves holding a girls hand and squeezing it and seeing if she squeezes back. Is this intended to be a short squeeze, or is it intended be happening the entire time you are holding her hand? Like a burst of squeeze, or just generally having a firm grip?

When you hold a girl's hand and she doesn't let go for say 20 to 30 seconds, it's a huge IOI. If she doesn't let go or slides away really slow it's on.

Yup, I wouldn't even really squeeze it, just hold her hand just like it says. Squeezing her hand shows your uncomfortable and is a signal that you want her to let go (it's usually the same if she squeezes your hand, but it varies situation to situation)

give a short little squeeze ..

it's girl code . .woman do this alot when they touch eachothers hand...
it triggers certain behaviours and instincts .. just give a short squeeze when you are leading her around.
