At least before the first time you have gone out with a girl, but you should still primarily call at the start. Why? Lets list the reasons.
Be Different - Any AFC can muster up the courage to punch a few letters down into a phone, and let the internet fairies whisk them away. A girl will be interested in a guy who is different from the pack (in non-creepy ways). It shows backbone to be able to call up a complete stranger, and talk to them in real-time when all the while both of you know, you want to sleep with her.
Texting does have its place mind you. Once I get to know someone better, I will text a lot, because agreeably, its an easier form of communication. But you have to stand out from the pack if you want to succeed.
