I talk about them and their social circle. People are so into themselves (just look at all the narcissists on FB and their pointless status updates- then again who’s reading them?). While hearing their stories I think critically, I find experiences I have in common and fit my story into their networks of association with some advice. Sometimes they take it on board other times they have an opposing way of thinking-this is where thinking critical helps. It helps if they feel comfortable enough to tell you their problems. Usually when you first meet someone they just brag about themselves and you have to gain their trust before they will start disclosing who they really are (insecurities and what not). I have noticed if I have a good argument to back up my point of view they will reconstruct their stories to match my criteria.

Like Blind_Oh!_bed_ience people are really into themselves so ask personal questions and they'll talk for hours.

Also, try to get into real details out of the most stupid things, try to find some incongruencies in what they are saying and then ask for explanation, this way you'll seem like you are really into what they are saying and not just asking to hit on them.

And if you run out of things to say just use the environment: make a compliment about some special thing that they are wearing and maybe nobody notices or pointed out...

yes ofcourse, just find something they wear what don't get complimented a lot, be the different boy, all those comments are good guys!
