Why is it that it's way easier to approach a girl alone with no one around versus approaching one alone surrounded by people walking by, like the mall for instance?

You worry to much about what other people think. If a girl is alone and no one else is around you know that if she rejects you there is no one else to witness it so its like it never happened. If there are other people around you start thinking "If i get rejected are these people going to laugh at me" and things of that sort. You just need to work on your AA in public that is all. It will go away eventually. Remember even if someone does laugh at you because you get rejected you will probably never see that person again anyway so what does it matter. Like Michael Jordan once said:

Approaching a girl alone by itself should be easier since there's no social pressure from her group.

Approach casually, and try not to surprise her or be creepy (like sneaking from behind or something).

You may use an opinion opener or a situational one. If it's during the day, direct openers are very effective too.
