Right, this forum is great for learning things from, but there are some things that I don't want to learn. I, for instance, did not used to be pissed off when people asked me to take their photograph.

Last night, some girl walked over from a lined up group she was in, handed me a camera and said
"can you take a photo of us"
So, I hooked my arm around her waist, pulled her in close and took a photo of us then gave her the camera back and continued with the conversation with my friends.

I don't think she meant that 'us'.

She then clarified things and I was then an arsehole and refused to take a picture of their group.

Why?

This is like the time I 'learnt' arachnophobia from a friend!

Well, I explained why. Trust me, dude, at the end of the day, that girl would have walked away without another word whether you took their picture or not.

True, but he shouldn't have refused to take the group photo afterwards... by taking a picture with her, he broke the ice in a funny way, but then refusing to take the picture of them just incorrectly used the cocky/funny approach.

After taking the picture of you and the girl, you should have just said (jokingly) "Aww fine, I'll take a picture of you and your friends, but you owe me one" or something like that. Her asking you to take the picture is an IOI (she could have asked anyone), and then you could have taken her up on what she owed you with a dance later or at least used it to re-engage after a while...
