Wat Slip n Slide said would definitely work, and even your other cocky-funny response sounds ok. What you said, actually, was probably the worst thing to say, though. It worked, so don't worry about it (if it works, no problem, right?

), but next time, you want to come across as being indifferent to whether you got the number or not. A simple "or not" with a shrug will throw her off. Her pause seemed to say to me that she was afraid you were a little forward. No problem there. Her hesitance was, in a way, a good thing, as she was having to decide what your intentions were, and how far she wanted to take a "continuation of a conversation". Having a piece of paper and pen, though, would help a lot in these situations, being able to just hand her both after your nonchalant "or not", affirms that you can take it or leave it, but you are definitely interested.
I always keep a fold-up-pen in my back pocket, and in this situation, using your receipt would make this seem an ordinary, but spontaneous thing. i prefer to have the number on a sheet of paper, as opposed to just in my phone. Either way, though, Congratulations!
Thanks for all replies. I quite like the "or not" response in this one.
Funnily enough, from such a short interaction with her, it progressed into getting her number and a date (drinks and meal) yesterday. It went well enough for me to get a 2nd date, I think.
In the end, I suppose, that if the girl likes you, she likes you. Therefore, on these rare occasions lol when a girl is into you from the start, such a short amount of time doesn’t prevent you from getting her number.
As for being cocky & funny, it actually quite suits my personality as I can come across as that (more cocky than funny though lol!) naturally, so I think I will try and build my skill in that area.
