| Bad idea. Don't practice at the party. If anything goes wrong, it will be communicated to others, it will propagate through the social network, and it will keep you from having fun at the party. Have you ever had a girl make it her personal mission to cockblock you at every opportunity? That's why you practice with strangers.
In the end, you decide what you do. If you want to maintain a non-shitty reputation (shitty reputation with good skills is good, good reputation with good skills is great, shitty reputation with undeveloped skills is shit!), I'll help save you a lot of grief:
* 1 girl is always the safest to approach, unless she's a cop or dominatrix. They know this; not necessarily consciously, but they do know it. If a girl is glued to her friends, she is doing something like what you do when you hesitate before approaching.
* 2 girls is workable, but ignoring women to make them jealous only works if she is already attracted to you (i.e., you're good-looking). If she fails to become jealous, want you more, and compete for attention, she'll dislike you. You will face hostility; whether it's active hostility or passive hostility depends on the girl. Active hostility is preferable.
* Figure out your strengths. Are you unintentionally funny? Are you charmingly sincere? Are you an obnoxious asshole? Somewhere in between? Learn a style that favors it!
* Don't do the apocalypse opener.
This is from my field experience. Your mileage may vary -- ask around, experiment, and see what works for you. Like a fresh musician, don't be so eager to do an open mic night when you only know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!
